The "backend" types in API were designed to decouple the API server
implementation from the daemon, or other parts of the code that
back the API server. This would allow the daemon to evolve (e.g.
functionality moved to different subsystems) without that impacting
the API server's implementation.
Now that the API server is no longer part of the API package (module),
there is no benefit to having it in the API module. The API server
may evolve (and require changes in the backend), which has no direct
relation with the API module (types, responses); the backend definition
is, however, coupled to the API server implementation.
It's worth noting that, while "technically" possible to use the API
server package, and implement an alternative backend implementation,
this has never been a prime objective. The backend definition was
never considered "stable", and we don't expect external users to
(attempt) to use it as such.
This patch moves the backend types to the daemon/server package,
so that they can evolve with the daemon and API server implementation
without that impacting the API module (which we intend to be stable,
following SemVer).

These comments were added to enforce using the correct import path for
our packages ("github.com/docker/docker", not "github.com/moby/moby").
However, when working in go module mode (not GOPATH / vendor), they have
no effect, so their impact is limited.
Remove these imports in preparation of migrating our code to become an
actual go module.

Before this patch, and error would be produced when starting the exec,
but the CLI would wait for the exec to complete, timing out after 10
seconds (default). With this change, an error is returned immediately
when creating the exec.
Note that "technically" this check may have some TOCTOU issues, because
'/etc/passwd' and '/etc/groups' may be mutated by the container in between
creating the exec and starting it.
This is very likely a corner-case, but something we can consider changing
in future (either allow creating an invalid exec, and checking before
starting, or checking both before create and before start).
With this patch:

The `GetImageOpts` struct is used for options to be passed to the backend,
and are not used in client code. This struct currently is intended for internal
use only.
This patch moves the `GetImageOpts` struct to the backend package to prevent
it being imported in the client, and to make it more clear that this is part
of internal APIs, and not public-facing.

The actual divergence is due to differences in the snapshotter and
graphfilter mount behaviour on Windows, but the snapshotter behaviour is
better, so we deal with it here rather than changing the snapshotter
behaviour.
We're relying on the internals of containerd's Windows mount
implementation here. Unless this code flow is replaced, future work is
to move getBackingDeviceForContainerdMount into containerd's mount
implementation.

The existing API ImageService.GetLayerFolders didn't have access to the
ID of the container, and once we have that, the snapshotter Mounts API
provides all the information we need here.

module, which will also be used by upcoming (patch) releases of containerd.

Implement a function that returns an error to replace existing uses of
the IsOSSupported utility, where callers had to produce the error after
checking.
The IsOSSupported function was used in combination with images, so implementing
a utility in "image" to prevent having to import pkg/system (which contains many
unrelated functions)

The existing runtimes reload logic went to great lengths to replace the
directory containing runtime wrapper scripts as atomically as possible
within the limitations of the Linux filesystem ABI. Trouble is,
atomically swapping the wrapper scripts directory solves the wrong
problem! The runtime configuration is "locked in" when a container is
started, including the path to the runC binary. If a container is
started with a runtime which requires a daemon-managed wrapper script
and then the daemon is reloaded with a config which no longer requires
the wrapper script (i.e. some args -> no args, or the runtime is dropped
from the config), that container would become unmanageable. Any attempts
to stop, exec or otherwise perform lifecycle management operations on
the container are likely to fail due to the wrapper script no longer
existing at its original path.
Atomically swapping the wrapper scripts is also incompatible with the
read-copy-update paradigm for reloading configuration. A handler in the
daemon could retain a reference to the pre-reload configuration for an
indeterminate amount of time after the daemon configuration has been
reloaded and updated. It is possible for the daemon to attempt to start
a container using a deleted wrapper script if a request to run a
container races a reload.
Solve the problem of deleting referenced wrapper scripts by ensuring
that all wrapper scripts are *immutable* for the lifetime of the daemon
process. Any given runtime wrapper script must always exist with the
same contents, no matter how many times the daemon config is reloaded,
or what changes are made to the config. This is accomplished by using
everyone's favourite design pattern: content-addressable storage. Each
wrapper script file name is suffixed with the SHA-256 digest of its
contents to (probabilistically) guarantee immutability without needing
any concurrency control. Stale runtime wrapper scripts are only cleaned
up on the next daemon restart.
Split the derived runtimes configuration from the user-supplied
configuration to have a place to store derived state without mutating
the user-supplied configuration or exposing daemon internals in API
struct types. Hold the derived state and the user-supplied configuration
in a single struct value so that they can be updated as an atomic unit.

Ensure data-race-free access to the daemon configuration without
locking by mutating a deep copy of the config and atomically storing
a pointer to the copy into the daemon-wide configStore value. Any
operations which need to read from the daemon config must capture the
configStore value only once and pass it around to guarantee a consistent
view of the config.

Windows Server 2016 (RS1) reached end of support, and Docker Desktop requires
Windows 10 V19H2 (version 1909, build 18363) as a minimum.
This patch makes Windows Server RS5 / ltsc2019 (build 17763) the minimum version
to run the daemon, and removes some hacks for older versions of Windows.
There is one check remaining that checks for Windows RS3 for a workaround
on older versions, but recent changes in Windows seemed to have regressed
on the same issue, so I kept that code for now to check if we may need that
workaround (again);

After dicussing with maintainers, it was decided putting the burden of
providing the full cap list on the client is not a good design.
Instead we decided to follow along with the container API and use cap
add/drop.
This brings in the changes already merged into swarmkit.

This enables image lookup when creating a container to fail when the
reference exists but it is for the wrong platform. This prevents trying
to run an image for the wrong platform, as can be the case with, for
example binfmt_misc+qemu.

Instead of having to go through files or registry values as is currently the
case.
While adding GMSA support to Kubernetes (https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/pull/73726)
I stumbled upon the fact that Docker currently only allows passing Windows
credential specs through files or registry values, forcing the Kubelet
to perform a rather awkward dance of writing-then-deleting to either the
disk or the registry to be able to create a Windows container with cred
specs.
This patch solves this problem by making it possible to directly pass
whole base64-encoded cred specs to the engine's API. I took the opportunity
to slightly refactor the method responsible for Windows cred spec as it
seemed hard to read to me.
Added some unit tests on Windows credential specs handling, as there were
previously none.
Added/amended the relevant integration tests.
I have also tested it manually: given a Windows container using a cred spec
that you would normally start with e.g.

I'll do another PR on Swarmkit after this is merged to allow services to use
the same option.
(It's worth noting that @dperny faced the same problem adding GMSA support
to Swarmkit, to which he came up with an interesting solution - see
https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/38632 - but alas these tricks are not
available to the Kubelet.)
